Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club shone at the South Coast Championships in Southampton last weekend. The club entered 11 crews — putting in some spectacular performances, fuelled by strength, strategy and teamwork.
The Men's Junior Four, comprising Arlo Adds, Carter Horrix, Louis Sheasby, Fred Giemza-Pipe and cox Esme Walters, as Hants & Dorset Champions, put in a robust performance, in their Championship event..
They not only gained a lead from the very start, but maintained it throughout — showcasing some exceptional dominance.
"The crew got off to an excellent start and quickly opened up a two-length lead, from which they were never challenged and went on to win in fine style," said coach, Garry Walters.
Itchen Imperial, the Hants & Dorset second crew managed to secure the runners up spot, with Bexhill, Bideford and Folkestone taking the remaining places.
The novice ladies' crew also made headlines, winning their heat to secure a place in the final where they finished third behind Poole A and B crews, beating Lymington and Herne Bay.
Special mention goes to the J14 and J16 crews, who put in some commendable performances. Both the girls and boys Under 14 quads won their races, the boys defeating 5 other crews, and the girls winning over Lymington, Christchurch and the second Shanklin crew. Despite the tough conditions, the boys' J16 quad managed second place.
These placings clinched the Aggregate Cup for Shanklin — an award given to the most successful club at the junior regatta.
This is the third consecutive year the club has earned the title.
With various wins and impressive performances, the club ended the season on a high note, setting a high bar for next year.
