Success for Shanklin at Island Rowing Regattas!
Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club went into the first two Hants and Dorset regattas of the weekend with high hopes after a strong winter. The weekend saw Ryde regatta on the Saturday, followed by Shanklin regatta on the Sunday.
On the Saturday, Shanklin had two fours entered, two singles and a pair. The Mens Novice Four of Joe Robertson, Harry Hopper, Matt Miselbach, Harry Miselbach and Ryde cox Sam Brading had to re row their heat, which led to them covering the course twice (4000metres) in twenty minutes. In the final, the Shanklin crew raced extremely well, but upon a tight finish, couldn't push through winners BTC, loosing by half a boat length.
In the Ladies Novice Fours, Juliette Wrixon, Sophie Swallow, Amber de Landro, Hannah Cusworth and cox Garry Walters managed fourth in their heat, missing a place in the final by just a few lengths.
In the Mens Junior Sculls, Alex Robertson took a comfortable win of over five lengths. Robertson then joined Joe Murray for the Mens Junior Pairs event, where they had a tough race with Southampton, but eventually gained clear water and rowed into the lead in the final stages to take the second win of the day for the club.
An excellent start to the season for the club, which everyone hoped to take to the following day at Shanklin.
The first race of the day at Shanklin was the J16 fours, which was raced over half of the 1200 metre course. Shanklin J16 Boys featured Sam Moseley, Tom Leaver, Henry Gove, Charlie Parkes and cox Jamiey Wain, the boys raced extremely well and finished fifth in their first ever race!
Shanklin J16 Girls, Juliette Wrixon, Sophie Swallow, Amber de Landro, Hannah Cusworth and cox Amy Jones finished a very good second in their race, a credit to the cox Amy, who was in her first ever race and did extremely well!
The third J16 crew was a mixed boat of Andrew Swallow, Daisy Faithful, Will Allsop, Sam Mabey and cox Rebecca Nigh but were the only crew in their event, but rowed extremely well throughout.
In the Mens Junior Sculls, Alex Robertson was in second place coming out of the turn and managed to close the gap to Christchurch, but couldn't managed to overhaul the lead, missing out by just half a length, leaving his Hants and Dorset Championship at 1-1.
In the Ladies Novice Fours, Juliette Wrixon, Hannah Cusworth, Amber de Landro, Rebecca Nigh and cox Garry Walters made their final and after a very close race with BTC finished in a dead heat for second place, an excellent result.
In the Mens Junior Pair, Alex Robertson and Joe Murray had a comfortable win in their race taking a two nil lead in their Hants and Dorset championship.
Finally, in the Mens Novice Fours, Joe Robertson, Harry Hopper, Matt Miselbach, Harry Miselbach and cox Alex Robertson made their final, before having a close race into their buoy they raced away from the turn well and took a two length victory, securing the second win of the day for the home club and promoting the crew to Junior rowing status, after such a close race the day before. This was especially impressive considering the crew age ranges between just 13-16 and had raced in an adult event!
Shanklin had an excellent weekend that saw four event wins over the two days, along with three second places and a host of other fantastic results. The regatta was a chance for our club to show off the new clubhouse, and with the sun shining and gloriously calm sea the event proved to be an excellent day!
