Shanklin enjoy continued success at Coalies!
Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club took the sixth win in five regattas for the club at Southampton Coalporters regatta! The club took two podiums and an excellent heat performance from the three events entered in, with only six rowers in the squad.
The first race of the day for the club was the heat of the Mens Junior Sculls. Championship leader Alex Robertson enjoyed a good start and after a close race with Christchurch towards the turn, he lengthed out on the return leg and took a comfortable win. In the final, he faced tough opponents and this showed as he was a length down on both scullers into the turn. On the return leg he moved up to second place, but finished two lengths down on the eventual winner Olly Hayward of Newport. This leaves Alex still leading his championship with two wins, with Newport and Christchurch holding one win each.
The clubs second race of the day came in the Mens Junior Four. The event is already regarded as the closest on the Hants and Dorset this year with three seperate winners before todays events, and all crews being considered contenders. The Shanklin crew of Joe Robertson, Matt Miselbach, Harry Hopper, Harry Miselbach and cox Alex Robertson knew how close the race with Itchen and Lymington would be. Off the start Shanklin took the lead, but were quickly neck and neck with Lymington. Into the turn the crew were just half a length down and ahead of Itchen. After a good turn, the boys continued to try and chase down Lymington. The final stages was an all out sprint and a very good return leg from Itchen left all crews within a length in the last two hundred metres. The young Shanklin crew suffered here and their punishing 1500 metres of rowing before had left them with nothing against the older opponents. They eventually finished two lengths behind winners Lymington. A fantastic race for the crew, who raced against strong crews on flat water. They will hope to further their progress in weeks to come on rougher water.
The final race and perhaps most promising was the Mens Junior Pairs straight final. Joe Murray and Alex Robertson had been gutted at Milford when a series of errors lead to their defeat to Southampton. On the flat waters of the Itchen the championship leaders hoped avenge the previous weeks loss. They started well and had a close race with Westover up to the buoy turn. After an excellent turn the dup took control of the return leg and maintained pressure to the line giving them a victory of over five lengths to the Westover crew. This takes their lead in the Hants and Dorset championship to 3-1.
The club left the regatta satisfied, with only six rowers producing excellent results and still leading both championships being contended by the club. The next regatta is Southampton ARC's, at Woolsten on the 14th of June.
