Scullers go inland for Silver Sculls

Shanklin had two scullers representing the club at the Weybridge Silver Sculls, a head race for scullers, covering around 3500 metres. Alex Robertson and Joe Murray, who have won the Mens Junior Pair championship this year for the club, were looking to lay down a marker in their first major inland head race.

In Division One, Alex Robertson had one eye on getting to know the course, with the other on attempting to lay down a competitive time for his Mens IM3 event. He achieved a time of 16 minutes 38 seconds which placed him 7th out of 15.

In Division Two, Joe Evans Murray was in the same position as Robertson for his first event. Not knowing the course, he had a good row, despite knowing the course equally as poorly as Alex and clocked a time of 16 minutes 57 seconds. This placed him 13th out of 17 in his very competitive J17 event.

Alex's second event came in Division Three where he competed in the Mens J18 event. Knowing the course far better than the first division he was able to focus more on the rowing, which showed, as he covered the course 15 seconds quicker, in 16 minutes 23 seconds. The time was enough to place him 12th out of 20 in the more competitive event.

Joe rowed in the final Divison (Four) of the day, in the Mens Novice event. Also steering a much better course, Joe hoped to improve on his time from his first event. However after a big push in the first event, he couldn't improve on his time but the 17 minute 37 effort placed him 5th out of 10 in his event, an excellent result.

The event was an excellent experiance for the scullers, and a sobering one, as the class of the inland rowers in their native fine boats was displayed.
