Shanklin's season so far

We are now halfway through the HDARA season so here’s an update of all the regattas we have attended and how our crews have done so far:

Coalporters- Novice sculler Jamie Gamble rowed up to Junior status and came 2nd in his heat narrowly missing out on a place in the final. Ladies senior pair of Daisy and Emily Faithfull came 1st in a straight final against two crews from Southampton.

Milford- Ladies senior pair came 1st in their final, winning by two lengths over host club Lymington. Jamie Gamble won his heat to progress to the final where he came 4th in his Novice sculls race. Senior sculler Joe Evans-Murray also came 4th in his final which was his first race of the season. The four Shanklin rowers then came together to form a composite crew with Christchurch in the mixed fours event to place 2nd behind Itchen.

Ryde- Although Daisy and Emily were the only crew representing Shanklin lots of members turned out to support and watch them win the Ladies Senior pairs event.

Shanklin- The J16 girls crew of Sophie Atkin, Mia Phelan, Yasmin Wright and Lottie Tapsell came 1st in their race over Coalporters shortly followed by a win for the mixed J14 quad of Rachael Debenham, Kayleigh Batchelor, Scarlett Phelan and Theo Phelan. The J16 boys quad of Ethan Walters, Riley Horrix, Sam Evans-Murray and Owen Denness came a close 2nd to Newport. Riley and Ethan then went back out on the water to gain 2nd and 3rd places respectively in the J16 single sculls event. Novice sculler Joe Robertson came a close 4th in his heat, just missing out on a spot in the final. Whilst Jamie Gamble won his heat to come 2nd in his final which was one of the closest race of the day. The newly formed Men’s Novice fours crew of Andrew Tapsell, Kevin Faithfull, Paul Gamble and Martin Berry had a good row in their final despite only having been out a handful of times. The J16 girls crew also rowed in the Ladies Novice fours race earning a close 2nd place. The Ladies Senior pair of Daisy ad Emily took another win in their five boat final and in the last race of the day the Men’s Senior four of Joe Evans-Murray, Gary Burch, Garry Walters and Joe Robertson came 2nd behind BTC. A day of many podium positions earned the club 2nd place in the aggregate.

Itchen- With only two members rowing for Shanklin, Joe Robertson came 2nd in his heat of the Men’s Novice sculls just missing out a place in the final and in the men’s Senior sculls Alex Robertson rowed his first race of the season to also came second in his heat to the eventual winner from Itchen.

Aside from HDARA regattas, Shanklin have also taken part in some river events.

At the Ball Cup regatta the J16 girls double of Lottie Tapsell and Mia Phelan and the J13 girls double of Scarlett Phelan and Kayleigh Batchelor both claimed bronze medals in their finals. Ethan Walters just missed out on a medal coming 4th in the J14 boys single.

At Walton and Weybridge regatta, Ethan Walters teamed up with Riley Horrix to win the J14 boys double. Ethan also finished 2nd in the J14 single as did the J14 double of Scarlett Phelan and Rachael Debenham. Both the J15 girls double of Mia Phelan and Lottie Tapsell and J13 girl double of Scarlett Phelan and Kayleigh Batchelor were knocked out in the preliminary stages by the eventual winners of their categories.

Reading regatta saw Ethan Walters and Riley Horrix take another win in the J14 boys double whilst the the J13 girls double of Scarlett Phelan and Kayleigh Batchelor and the J16 double Sophie Atkin and Mia Phelan were knocked out in the 2 boat semi finals.

We look forward to Swanage regatta this weekend as we continue with the Hants and Dorset season!
