Juniors win Aggregate Trophy at Newport Regatta!

Shanklin Sandown Rowing club enjoyed another successful competition at the weekend with 4 wins over the two-day Newport regatta, and strong performances all around in most racing categories, reflecting real strength in depth as the older, more experienced athletes competed alongside those making their debut, with some rowers just twelve years of age.

The racing on Saturday saw the club’s junior senior crew of Ethan Walters, Matt Page, Riley Horrix, Charlie Pitt & Emily Faithfull take the runners up spot behind Championship leaders BTC in the Junior-Senior final, whilst the Novice men’s crew of Tom Flower, Paul Gamble, Simon Nevitt & Fred Giemza-Pipe enjoyed a great row but just missed out on a final spot on their racing debut in this line up.

Shanklin’s Senior Mens Crew of Alex Robertson, Joe Murray, Ethan Walters and Jamie Gamble gave an excellent performance providing the eventual winners BTC with their hardest race of the day in their heat.

On Sunday, Daisy Faithfull increased her lead in the senior sculls championship with a dogged victory over her nearest rival. Daisy had to dig deep to overcome her opposition taking the lead in the final 300m to secure a significant victory, with only three regattas left.

The ladies’ senior pair of Daisy and Emily Faithfull suffered a rare defeat, but still hold on to the championship lead, whilst both Emily Faithfull and Rachael Debenham finished second in their respective sculling races. Both senior mens pairs combinations Jamie Gamble & Alex Robertson and Ethan Walters & Riley Horrix gave good, solid performances, finishing second in their heats

The club’s juniors again dominated the junior events with the top two spots in all three races with boys J16 quad of Arlo Adds, Ben Smith, Fred Giemza-Pipe, Ollie Hatch & Yas Wright taking the win from the club’s mixed B crew, with Smith also winning the single sculls event from clubmate Hatch.

The club also boated two J14 crews, with the crew of Immy Burfitt, Ella Haydon, Layla Katirewa, Izzy Bounds & Esme Walters (Cox) taking the victory on this occasion over their clubmates Adam Farley, Annabelle Steward, Evie Crew, Freya Jones and Damia Robert (Cox)

The victories secured the trophy for most successful club at the junior regatta.
