Nine junior members of Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club travelled to the Copper Box Arena in London on Friday for the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships – one of the biggest youth rowing events in the country.
The competition, organised by London Youth Rowing and supported by Concept2, attracted clubs and schools from across the UK, with SSRC enjoying its most successful ever outing at a single NJIRC event.
Leading the way was Chloe Walker, who claimed gold in the Girls Year 13 2,000m on her championship debut. Chloe crossed the line 19 seconds clear of the field and also set a new personal best, knocking 3 seconds off her previous time.
There was more gold for the Isle of Wight club thanks to Isaac King, who stormed to victory in the Boys Year 12 2,000m, finishing 9 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
Martha Eggleton also impressed on her first appearance at the championships, taking silver in the Girls Year 10 5-minute event while recording a personal best.
Elsewhere, Rose Collier and Digby Ridgwell both posted personal bests, while Fin Diffey and Alex Collier were making their NJIRC debuts.
Three SSRC members competing for their schools also turned in notable performances. Elsie Flower finished 24th in the Year 7 Girls event on her first appearance at the championships, Connie Batley-Smith won gold in the Year 10 Girls event and Amelia Chambers placed 27th in the same category.
