Shanklin Sandown rowing club’s Daisy Faithfull, won Gold yesterday in the GB Women’s Eight at the World University Games in Germany. Based in the Rhine-Ruhr valley in Germany, this is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, with over 10,000 students taking part, from over 150 countries. In a stacked field of top crews from the USA, Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Germany, it was always going to be close.

However, in a nail-biting race, the GB eight led from the start but were closely pushed all the way to the line by the Dutch crew. Daisy, competing under the University of London, faced a gruelling trials process over several months, to secure the place in the top university squad in the country and compete for her country.

All the more remarkable achievement considering long term injury and setbacks in her early university years. Club Captain Garry Walters was delighted with the result. ‘Daisy joined the club when she was 13 and it has been great to track her progress and success for the club and beyond. Daisy gained an England vest at 18. To have further international representation is truly inspiring for us all at Shanklin, encouraging everyone to aim high.
