Bass Andre, from Shanklin-Sandown Rowing Club, claimed the top spot for Great Britain at the European Offshore Championships in Manavgat, Turkey, marking the first international vest of Andre's career.
Offshore racing takes place out in the open sea over a 6km course, and Manavgat Beach in Antalya provided a stunning backdrop for last week’s event, which also hosted the European Beach Sprints Championships.
In near-perfect conditions for offshore racing, Andre — earning their first international vest — exploded off the line and took an early lead. From there, the SSRC athlete dominated the field, extending the gap with every stroke. Commentators expressed astonishment as the margin grew to more than a minute over fellow Brit Hewison, with the rest of the field trailing even further behind.
Sprinting up the beach to claim the Gold, Andre turned to see the other competitors still battling it out offshore.
Bass said:“I couldn’t quite believe it – it was surreal out there.”
Club Captain Garry Walters added:
The whole of Shanklin RC could not be more proud. Ten years ago, Bass joined the club while still at school, having first tried the sport through indoor rowing. They’ve achieved so much since then, overcoming injury and setbacks along the way. Following a sensational season, to become European champion is the absolute icing on the cake.”
Congratulations Bass from everyone at Shanklin!
