Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club finished the year in style, with national recognition at the British Rowing Awards 2024. We are incredibly proud to announce that Lesley Walters won the Talent Development Coaching Award, which we feel is a recognition which is long overdue. Under her watchful eye, Shanklin has transformed into a nationally competitive sculling centre which inspires young athletes and fosters performance development. Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby won the Junior Crew Award, impressively overcoming stiff competition from the Windsor Boys School. This follows their impressive feat of going undefeated, both domestically and internationally. Notably, the boys became national champions, as well as convincingly overcoming the French opposition in the GB vs France Match in the summer. Also, Alumni Jamie Gamble won Young Coach of the Year for his efforts with the University of Surrey. These impressive achievements are representative of the wonderful season which we have experienced here at Shanklin this calendar year, spanning from the longer time-trial style winter races, to the shorter 2km summer racing. In addition to the numerous national titles for Louis and Carter, they also won the Hampshire & Dorset Men’s Junior Four Championship title with Arlo Adds and Freddie Giemza-Pipe. Our Junior athletes have continually aspired to be nationally competitive, and our Girls J14 Quadruple Scull crew embodied this ethos, achieving a top ten finish at the National Schools Regatta in May. Preparations have already begun for the new year and the upcoming season, and we look forward to seeing what our athletes push themselves to achieve.
